Is An Ice Bath Better Than Cold Water Swimming?

Is An Ice Bath Better Than Cold Water Swimming?

There are many physical and mental health benefits to be had from immersing yourself in cold water. However, while many people enjoy cold water swimming, there are lots of good reasons to opt for an ice bath instead.

Some people might baulk at the idea of plunging into cold water, whether in a lake or river, or an ice bath. But while a heated swimming pool may seem more attractive, there are some well-established reasons for taking a dip in the cold:

  • It can reduce inflammation by restricting blood flow to your extremities
  • Potential mental health benefits, including the endorphin high when you get out
  • Being in cold water can support mindfulness exercises

What Are The Best Reasons For Choosing An Ice Bath For Your Cold Water Immersion?

Given the choice between relying on trips to local (or not so local) rivers, lakes or even the seaside for your cold water therapy and an ice bath located at home, there are several good reasons for choosing the latter.

Wild Swimming Society Notes Cold Water Swimming Dangers

  • Cold shock can lead to hyperventilation, panic and incapacitation
  • By contrast, if you have any problems in an ice bath you can get out immediately
  • Hypothermia can sometimes kick in after you get out of the water, so you will benefit from being able to get dry and warm faster
  • These issues may be more acute in cold weather when it is harder to get warm again quickly

Creatures That May Hurt You When Swimming In UK Waters

  • You may be at greater risk of harmful bites from water-borne leeches
  • Jellyfish stings are a risk in the sea
  • You are at a higher risk of being bitten by ticks or other invertebrates after you get out of the water if the watercourse is near long grass.

Surfers Against Sewage Highlights Pollution Issues

  • Sewage pollution has caused many people serious health problems when swimming in the sea.
  • Many rivers are also unsafe for the same reason.
  • Environment Agency data has found all the rivers and lakes in England contain forever chemicals.
  • Algae can be an issue in some lakes, with England’s largest lake, Windermere, being particularly badly affected.
  • Plastic pollution has also caused harm and blockages to waterways

Why An Ice Bath Is More Convenient

  • The convenience of an ice bath is you can access it without having to travel for miles.
  • You can use it at any time of day, unlike sea swimming when the tides can affect what you can and can’t do.
  • You can get in and out immediately, which you cannot always do while wild swimming.

How Can You Gain The Greatest Benefits From Cold Water Immersion?

None of this is to say that you should never do any wild swimming. After all, you may get an opportunity while on holiday by a clean stretch of coastal water, or by a pristine, algae-free lake. You may also do it as part of a social outing and for the challenge involved.

However, having an ice bath at home offers the maximum convenience of always having a cold water facility close to hand.

When you add to that the fact that it will always be clean, is safer to use and may be ideal when you just need a quick dip to recover when you are sore and stiff after a day of strenuous activity, the benefits of having it as your cold water source of choice are clear.
